Origin Housing

Aspiration Facades were asked to help Guinness Housing Association repair a group of timber frame properties because the existing render had failed and this was causing water egress and further damage to the properties.

working-with-originAspiration Facades, working in conjunction with Climate Energy, completed a large programme of External Wall Insulation works for Origin Housing near the central Camden Head Office.

The project consisted of 4 number 4 Storey blocks of flats and 12 terrace properties. All of the properties were situated in Camden central London. The scheme was overseen by the local Planning and Conservation departments because of the sensitive nature of the location and existing features of the buildings. Working in partnership with the project team we were able to develop a package that ensured:

  • Improved thermal performance of the properties
  • Sympathetic approach to the aesthetical appearance of the buildings
  • Installation of a system compliant with building control and ECO funding
  • Detailed construction plan to deal with the location

Three of the 4 blocks of flats were existing red brick Victorian properties with decorative brick detailing. Working with the conservation and planning teams we developed a scheme to install full brick slip system to the properties, this is one of the largest schemes of this type in the UK. To further enhance the overall appearance of the work we installed the brick-slips in an “Old English” and “Flemish” bond (see 2014 finished photo above) brick pattern to replicate the existing appearance, this was supported by an aged brick installation and addition of multi coloured slips to avoid a one tone finish. Above the windows we replicated the soldier brick work. The planning and conservation teams were particularly impressed with how sympathetic the upgrades co-existed with original surrounding buildings

The other properties were insulated with a modern render finish or a combination of render and brick slip. The project has been a resounding success, the response from the residents and client was great and the project is currently shortlist for the INCA Award Finalist 2015, watch this space…
